As a certified breastfeeding educator, I know how daunting it is to feed a baby all day without any apparent advantage and how fatigue will affect your milk supply. I also know how to discourage the first eighteen months of paternity can be without a plan. I know, because with my first son I did the opposite of what is taught in this book. Before my second baby was born, they introduced me to Babywise's concepts. Applying these principles revolutionized my thinking. Instead of being in child slavery, I was released to be the mother God wanted me to be. I've constantly used this series with the women I advise. These mothers have had tremendous success, whether bottle or breastfeeding." Barbara Philips, R.N., C.L.E. I got a set of audio tapes from this series. Being deeply impressed with the insight and relevance of content, I started to apply the principles in my practice. The word of mouth among our community has helped our practice grow exponentially. Dr. Jim Pearson, D. Johnson City, Tennessee I am a practicing pediatrician and assistant professor of pediatrics. Residents and new mothers I work with have found Babywise overwhelmingly successful. My residents report a positive difference in the confidence of new mothers who work with this plan compared to those who do not. Babywise freedom provides a new mother is so refreshing. My parents become babies with Babywise." Dr. Linda Meloy, Dr. Richmond, Virginia I have been using successfully On Becoming Babywise in my general pediatric practice over the past few years. I found it a very useful resource for parents. I think any negative result associated with this material is due to the misappliance of the principles." -- Dr. Thomas Gill, M.D., Pediatrics, Johnson City, Tennesee"Babywise provides a sound paternity advice and pediatric care common sense to many parents who are confused, frustrated and asleep. As a pediatrician and father of four, my wife and I regularly receive positive feedback on the behavior of our children and sleep habits. Parents feel confident and relaxed when they have a plan and goal for their baby and family. Once a family has found success with the principles of Babywise, they pass along their satisfaction to every new father they know. Just, "It works!" Dr. David M. Miller, M.D. Superior, Colorado From the author "As a pediatrician, I cannot discuss with the success of On Becoming Babywise. It is such a practical approach to the upbringing of children. It provides babies with a necessary structure and stability and brings the joy and love so necessary in our homes today. The effects of not using On Becoming Babywise appear very quickly. Therefore, I have made these principles a priority of the debate in each child care visit. Parents constantly tell me, "It changed our lives." Dr. Janet Dunn, M.D. Chatsworth, California "As an obstetrician and mother, my concern for a healthy departure continues beyond the moment of delivery. Because the principles of On Becoming Babywise are so effective, I consider it part of my extended medical care for the family. The principles are simple, but surprising. They constantly produce babies who are healthy, happy and sleeping at night at an early age. Feeding a baby on demand simply cannot be compared to Babywise's overall health benefits. Concepts draw the guessing of early upbringing and provide new mothers with confidence to know what happens next." Dr. Sharon Nelson, M.D. Glendale, California "As family doctors and a team of wives, we are often asked questions related to child-rearing and general child care. Most of our basic answers are found in On Becoming Babywise. To answer the parenting questions, it has become a practical guide, giving it a sense of competence and confidence as doctors and as parents. When the principles are put into practice, parents reap abundant rewards." --Tony Burden, M.D. and Margaret Burden, M.D. Bellingham, Washington" As family doctors and a team of wives, we are often asked questions related to the upbringing of children and the general care of children. How to Sleep Better with a Sleeping Routine Programming the SandmanSleeping is something you've done all your life, but the older you are, the harder it can be to sleep like a baby. Busy hours, work or school tensions, and a hundred other distractions can keep you awake. There are steps you can take to get into the best mood for 7-9 hours of deep sleep. Here are some ways to plan your sleep routine so you wake up feeling well rested and ready for the next day. First, set an alarm. Not to wake up, but to sleep. Even for adults, the best dream requires an hour of bed set.1 It's easy to forget the watch while another episode of your favorite show is broadcast, so put a night alarm as a reminder. But don't hit the sack right away when the bell hits - leave some time for your routine. It's 15 minutes to prepare for tomorrow. A restless mind is not a restless mind. To die in the morning minutes could keep you awake.2 Write down some chores the night before. And don't forget to make a list of tasks. There are tasks you need to complete, and you're afraid you'll forget them in the morning. Getting rid of a list of tasks takes it out of your mind and you plan it so you can rest easy.3 If your list gets stressed there are ways to take care of you. Then head to that stress. Practicing care has proven to reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality and can even help with insomnia.4 Meditation puts you in the perfect mentality to get away from the land of dreams. There are many videos available in applications or online. Publishing is another simple way to calm your mind by getting your thoughts and feelings on paper.5 Go analogous and get an inspiring magazine to write to avoid all distractions on your computer. Finally, go down to the drift. Reading before bed is an excellent way to relax your brain and sleep. It can reduce stress levels in the middle in about six minutes.6 A good work of fiction can get you out of the real world and the realm of imagination, wouldn't you rather concentrate on an epic battle between invented kings than on the epic battle that your child might have prepared in the morning? And try a paper book. (Remember that?) Avoid bright screens at bedtime. The bright light of a TV, computer or smartphone can affect your sleep patterns and keep you alert when you should be sleeping.7 Leave the electronics and social networks behind (the political hits of your crazy uncle will not help you relax, anyway). If you can't sleep yet... Don't lie down in bed taking and turning if you're restless. It's better to get up and re-establish. Try some of the previous activities for a short time before returning to bed.8 Ten minutes of meditation or reading could save you hours of looking at the ceiling. Why wait? Have a better time to sleep tonight! Choose an activity above and commit to adding it to your sleep routine tonight. Next week, try adding another one. Soon you'll be a pillow pro. Hit the hay the right way, so you can be healthy for good. Sources:1 Soehner AM, Kennedy KS, Monk TH.
